Trafford top of stores table as World Cup boosts John Lewis
By James Chapelard
John Lewis' Trafford Centre store was the best performing in the group last week, new figures reveal.
Sales were up 22.1 per cent in the week to June 12 only behind the chain's online operation JohnLewis.com, where sales rose 33 per cent compared with last year.
The Cheadle store by contrast reported a modest climb in sales of just 5.4 per cent, at the lower end of the table. John Lewis said the World Cup had helped boost sales across its stores.
Simon Russell, head of multi channel, said: “Johnlewis.com led the way with a 33 per cent increase, but it was Trafford (+22 per cent) and Knight & Lee (+20 per cent) that claimed the top spots for shops along with some stunning results from the southeast heavyweights such as Oxford Street, Peter Jones and Bluewater who were all just shy of +20 per cent.
“The World Cup certainly influenced sales with electrical and home technology taking top slot. Televisions go from strength to strength and vision sales were +42 per cent. The trend for larger screens continues, helped by trade-in and Blu-ray offers. There was life beyond football, however. PCs and white goods also showed solid growth with value ranges, particularly from the former, in demand.”
