Trafford Centre helps John Lewis break pre-Christmas record

By James Chapelard

John Lewis's Trafford Centre store was the second best performing in the group last week after record sales.

Sales were up 31.2 per cent in the week to November 28 only beaten by the department store chain's Bluewater store in Kent which saw sales increase 31.6 per cent in the period compared to last year.

Trafford Centre has been performing strongly in the run up to Christmas having been in the top ten best performing store for the last six weeks.

John Lewis Cheadle also achieved double digit growth with sales up 17 per cent in the period. Across all stores revenues were up 22.4 per cent on the same week last year.

Nat Wakely, one of John Lewis's regional operations directors, said the 22.4 per cent increase across the group had broken all records. He added: “We were up every day, with six days in double-digit growth. Twenty-one branches were in double figures, as was every buying group, and records abounded!

“Sales were plentiful from fashion to televisions, having started the week with a particularly strong Sunday. Bluewater set the best increase for a shop at +31.6 per cent with a record week and terrific advances across all merchandise and a new high for the foodhall. Trafford saw a 31.2 per cent uplift, while Norwich and Cambridge (record Saturday) provided a fantastic eastern duo with +25.7 per cent and +23.3 per cent respectively.”
