Expansion of airport World Freight Terminal approved
By James Chapelard
Plans to create a new cargo hangar at Manchester Airport World Freight Terminal have been approved by Manchester City Council's planning committee.
Two cottages on Hasty Lane, Ringway will be demolished to make way for a new 200,000 sq ft depot which airport bosses said would help growth in the upturn.
A 300-year-old pond containing a colony of great-crested newts will also be destroyed.
Under previous plans, two hangars were due to be built but that idea was shelved because of the economic downturn. The revised plans saved one of the homes, 400-year-old Grade II-listed Rose Cottage, from demolition.
The new hangar will be off Runger Lane, near the current freight terminal. A new junction will also be built between Hasty Lane and Runger Lane.
A spokesman for Manchester Airport said: “Our proposal to continue with the development of this new cargo unit will give us an opportunity to have modern facilities in place to take advantage of the economic recovery when it arrives ahead of competitor airports.
“While we are aware of the sensitivities we are committed to developing in a sustainable manner and want to continue to fulfil our role as a major job creator for the city and the region.”
Campaigners from Stop Expansion at Manchester Airport opposed the plans on the grounds that extra traffic would increase carbon emissions.
