New Salford vice chancellor is South African
Salford University has appointed an archaeologist from South Africa as its new vice chancellor.
Professor Martin Hall, recently deputy vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town, will take up his new role when Professor Michael Harloe retires next summer.
In a news release, Salford University said that during his 25 years at the University of Cape Town, Prof Hall “contributed to transforming the student demographic – with black students now in the majority, and many from the poorest communities”. It added that he was “an outspoken critic of the inequities of apartheid-era education”.
Prof Hall was born in Guildford and holds dual British and South African citizenship.
He graduated from Cambridge and moved to South Africa where he was appointed lecturer and head of department in archaeology, director of the centre for african studies, dean of higher education development and deputy vice chancellor, all at Cape Town.
Professor Hall said: “Salford offers unique opportunities in higher education. I believe it can become a new sort of university, combining the richness of its past with exciting new developments such as links with MediaCityUK.
“Access to universities is a priority for me and it is important that we seek out talent from across the world and celebrate the richness of diversity.”
Dr Alan Mawson, the university’s chair of council, added: “I am delighted that we have secured the appointment of Martin Hall to succeed Professor Michael Harloe as Salford’s next vice chancellor.
“Appointing someone as principled, committed and capable as Martin is a real coup for the University and we have confidence in his experience and abilities to lead Salford at this exciting time.”
