BJL waits to hear on Bradford & Bingley account

Manchester advertising agency BJL is waiting to see how the government rescue of Bradford & Bingley will affect its advertising account, worth £10m in billings.

The agency, based on Quay Street, helped to revive the mortgage bank’s bowler hat logo in TV and press ads in recent years.

Now the business is being broken up with Santander, owner of Abbey, taking the deposit side and the government taking on the mortgage book to add to its commitment to Northern Rock.

Both Abbey and Northern Rock have existing relationships with other advertising agencies.

Managing director Nicky Unsworth said Bradford & Bingley was keeping them up to date.

Bradford & Bingley’s adverts have reflected the change in the bank’s strategy, switching from promoting “my nice little earner” buy-to-let mortgages to pushing for more deposits as wholesale funding dried up.
