Hotels, pubs and clubs associations join pro-TIF lobby
By By Simon Binns
The Manchester Hoteliers Association (MHA) and the Manchester Pub and Club Network (MPCN) have joined United City, the pro-TIF lobby group, growing its membership to more than 75 organisations.
The MHA represents 50 hotels and venues in Greater Manchester, while the MPCN has a membership of over 600.
The two organisations have been joined by hotels Arora International, Malmaison, 888 Hotel Ltd, Holiday Inn Express, Radisson Edwardian and Novotel, whilst bar chain Kro and the Heathcotes restaurant group are also members.
Stephen Miles, chairman of the MHA, said: “Visitors to Greater Manchester demand the same good quality, reliable transport network they experience when travelling throughout Europe – and the £3bn TIF package provides the only realistic way of securing much needed investment.
“With the congestion charge limited to peak times only, hotels throughout the conurbation will benefit massively from the investment.
Miles said staff transportation at unsociable hours was a financial drain for its members. “The Radisson Edwardian spends thousands of pounds each year on taxis getting staff to and from work,” he said.
“The TIF package would improve the safety and reliability of our public transport network as well as extending the hours at which it operates, and could potentially save our members hundreds of thousands of pounds.”
Phil Burke, spokesperson for the MPCN, said: “We are satisfied that the peak time only congestion charge within TIF will have no negative impact upon the region’s economy and the massive transport improvements will be a huge benefit to everyone who uses our bars, restaurants, and other leisure facilities."
