The demands placed upon them are greater, but the supply of entrepreneurs in this region is as plentiful as ever. Despite the recession, we had no shortage of aspiring, ambitious people to choose from when compiling our second annual 40 under 40 listing.

If any of them feel aggrieved that the long boom came to an end just when they were growing their businesses and realising their potential, they are too positive to say so. For achievers like these, the present situation is just another opportunity.

That is why we are so pleased to honour them at our 40 under 40 dinner taking place at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on Monday, June 29.
