Crain's Businesswoman of the year is Diane Weir
Diane Weir was named as the inaugural Crain’s Manchester Business Businesswoman of the Year.
The managing director of Waste Management Ltd, based in Trafford Park, was clearly moved by the honour.
In her acceptance speech she told how she built up her £6m turnover business despite not having the best start to adult life, having become a single mother at the age of 17.
Her triumph over adversity was mirrored by a number of other winners whose achievements were lauded at a glittering event at the Radisson Edwardian Manchester.
As well as taking the overall prize, Weir was the winner in the business services category. Winners in other categories were:
Manufacturing/Technology: Sharon O’Kane, chief scientific officer and co-founder, Renovo, Manchester.
Education: Jennie Johnson, managing director, Kids Allowed, Manchester,
Hospitality: Chantelle Tupman, operations director, Clough Manor, Oldham.
Non-profit: Nusret Ahmed, services director, Manchester Asian Care.
Property: Sara-Jane Preston, Atisreal UK, Manchester.

The Crain’s Manchester Business 2008 Businesswoman of the Year awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday, December 2, at the five-star Radisson Edwardian Manchester hotel. It is built on the site of the Free Trade Hall which played an enormous role in the social and political history of the city.
Now one of the country’s leading five-star hotels, the Radisson Edwardian continues to welcome the world’s leading entertainers, politicians and minds to work, debate and relax in luxurious, friendly and impressive surroundings.
Since opening over four years ago the hotel has gone on to win acclaim for the quality of its service and surroundings, winning Large Hotel of the Year at the Marketing Manchester awards, the North West Tourism Awards and most recently at the national Enjoy England tourism awards earlier this year.
We at the Radisson Edwardian Manchester hotel are proud to host the Businesswoman of the Year 2008 awards ceremony, welcoming all the finalists who have each made an exceptional contribution to their industry. Each of the finalists is truly deserving of the recognition this prestigious award bestows upon them and all are winners in their own right.
We are delighted to welcome the Crain’s Manchester Business Businesswoman of the Year finalists. As an award-winning hotel we understand the pressures and excitement of industry recognition and are thrilled to be able to host these businesswomen as they mark this momentous achievement. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my congratulations to every finalist for their contribution to the success and development of their particular organisation, and take this opportunity to acknowledge the high achievement of women in the workplace and the inspiration they are to their colleagues and fellow professionals.
Congratulations to all the finalists.
