The Crain’s Best Places to Work initiative was created with several goals in mind:

- To recognise and honour those companies that have created positive work environments

- To recognise and share best practices

- To promote local employers

- To provide valuable feedback and data to participating companies that will assist them in measuring             levels of employee satisfaction and engagement

Rankings are based on an independent survey that asks employees to rate their company on the following:

CRAIN’S BEST PLACES TO WORK 2010

Crain’s Manchester Business Best Places to Work is designed to honour the area's leading employers. We are looking for companies that go beyond the norm to foster an enjoyable and meaningful work environment for their employees.

Companies are judged based on the results of an employee survey independently administered by Quantum Market Research. The survey evaluates:

- Team effectiveness
- Retention probability
- Trust with co-workers
- Individual contribution
- Manager effectiveness
- Trust in senior leaders
- Feeling valued
- Work engagement
- People practices

Human Resources managers or other company representatives should complete and submit this nomination form. Only one submission per company will be accepted. A company must have a minimum of 10 employees in order to qualify and must have operations in Greater Manchester or north Cheshire. Companies will be ranked in four categories:

- Nearly big 10-50 employees
- Big 51-100 employees
- Bigger 101-250 employees
- Biggest 251+ employees

Once the nominations have been submitted, each company will be asked to complete and submit employee surveys to determine the final rankings. The employees who complete this survey will ultimately determine the rankings of the best companies in each category.

Crain’s Manchester Business will recognise the finalists and announce the top companies at a high energy awards luncheon in June. The finalists, runners up and winners will also be profiled in the paper and featured on the breaking news website.

TIMETABLE

2 April       -   Nominations close
3 May        -   Deadline for completed surveys
17 June    -   Awards luncheon at the Ramada, Manchester Piccadilly

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How many employees need to complete the surveys?

In order for the results to be statistically significant, a certain percentage of employees need to complete the survey based upon the total number of local employees. You will be notified as to your respective minimum completion rate upon receiving the URL for the survey from Quantum Market Research. The breakdown is:

- Less than 50 employees = 85%
- 51-150 = 70%
- 151 - 500 = 50%
- 501 - 1,000 = 30%
- 1,001-3,000 = 15%
- 3,001 - 5,000 = 8%
- More than 5,000 = 5%

How long are the surveys?
The surveys take anywhere between 15-20 minutes, but it does depend on the individual and their rate of response.

What are the benefits of participating?
All participants receive, at no charge, a confidential report showing how their company performed. Finalists are honoured at an awards celebration in June. All finalists are given an award commemorating their performance. Winning companies and runners-up will be profiled in Crain’s Best Places to Work publication in June. Finalists are granted permission to use the Best Places to Work logo in its employment ads, letterhead, business cards, web site, etc. adding value to your company's reputation.

What if my company does not fair well in the competition? Will any of that information be published in the paper?
We are looking for the best places to work, NOT the worst. Names of companies that participate in the employee surveys but are not selected as finalists will not be made public. All information is kept strictly confidential.

Will the number of nominations a company receives affect their ranking?
No. Please only submit one nomination per company and make sure that the contact person is the appropriate party to disseminate the employee survey and manage the process.

Is it confidential?
Yes. Employees complete the survey anonymously. Crain’s does not see the full report, only the final result for ranking purposes.
