Manchester-based civil service jobs outsourced to India
Manchester-based finance jobs at culture quango The British Council are being outsourced to India in the first exercise of its kind in the public sector.
Prior to the move, Indian workers will be brought over to shadow staff at Bridgewater House on Whitworth Street in the city centre.
The Public and Commercial Services Union has attacked the move, saying that staff are angry and upset.
The organisation, whose job is to promote British culture abroad, is cutting 500 out of 1,300 UK-based staff, 280 of whom are permanent employees. It has been forced to make redundancies because of a £40m cut in its £205m budget.
No final decision has been made, but 58 finance posts, up to 40 IT posts and 15 centre of excellence posts are said to be on the list for outsourcing.
The British Council said it hoped the job losses would be voluntary.
