The latest RAJAR figures will make pleasant reading for radio station owner Steve Penk as Oldham-based The Revolution continues to draw in more listeners.

The former Key 103 DJ’s station has seen listening share more than double from 1.2 per cent in the last quarter of 2008 to 2.4 per cent by the end of March. The station has also recorded its highest ever reach since Penk bought it from previous owners UKRD and Oldham Evening Chronicle publishers Hurst, Kidd & Rennie last September with 27,000 listeners up from last quarter’s 21,000. Listeners are also tuning in for longer with the average time almost doubling from 4.8 hours to 8.1.

Other stations which have seen rises include BBC Radio Manchester which saw its listening share increase from 4.3 per cent to 5.5 per cent. Stockport-based Imagine FM which lost more than half its listening share during 2008 made a modest gain from 1.2 per cent to 1.3 per cent in the last three months. The station was recently acquired by publishing entrepreneur Damian Walsh from UTV Media.

Galaxy Manchester’s share rose from 5.7 per cent to 6.8 per cent with reach increasing from 432,000 listeners to 452,000.

Losers in the three months to the end of March included Bauer’s Key 103 which saw listener share fall from 9.2 per cent to 7.8 per cent with reach dipping from 540,000 listeners to 488,000. Smooth Radio (North West)’s share fell from 5.8 per cent to 5.4 per cent and its reach declined in the first three months of the year from 711,000 listeners to 670,000.
