Salford Star wins Plain English award
The Plain English Campaign has named alternative community magazine the Salford Star as Best Regional Newspaper Award.
Editor Stephen Kingston will be presented with the award by impressionist Rory Bremner at a ceremony in London today.
Kingston said he was delighted, especially as the last time one of these awards came to Salford, his nemesis Salford City Council was given a Golden Bull Award, which go to the “worst examples of written tripe”.
Kingston said: “We want everyone in Salford to read the magazine and get some truth, and we’re absolutely made up that the Plain English Campaign, one of the most trusted institutions in Britain, has recognised our written style.
“We’ve now won two top awards this year, and it’s a crying shame that we haven’t been able to print our Christmas issue through lack of funding.
“There is no public money available for quality community magazines like ours to exist, despite our MP and Communities Minister, Hazel Blears, saying: ‘A strong independent media is a vital part of any democracy’. In plain English, Hazel, get your finger out yer ballroom and sort it out!”
The magazine is produced by Mary Burns Community Group, which is named after Communist Manifesto co-author Frederick Engels’ mistress, who lived in Salford.
