MMU joins pro-TIF group

By Simon Binns

Manchester Metropolitan University has joined United City, the group of businesses backing Greater Manchester’s £2.7bn Transport Innovation Fund bid.

The university, which has around 34,000 students and employs more than 4,400 staff, takes United City’s membership to 160.

Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Trust and the City South Partnership, which is responsible for the development of the university district, also joined recently..

John Brooks, MMU vice chancellor, said: “The TIF package would deliver significant transport improvements to each of our 10 districts, including fantastic improvements to and through the Oxford Road corridor.

“As one of the country’s largest universities with thousands of staff and students making important journeys each day, we are committed to supporting sustainable travel plans — and we are unlikely to have an opportunity like this to revolutionise transport in our city region for decades to come.”
