By Simon Binns

Dutch budget hotel group CitizenM is targeting Manchester as part of its European expansion plans.

The company currently operates one hotel, at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, and will open another in the Dutch capital later this year. CitizenM has also acquired a site in Glasgow recently and will open there in 2009. Thijs Brugman, head of real estate at CitizenM, told Crain's: “As one of the major cities in the UK, Manchester is definitely on target list for CitizenM. We recently acquired a site in Glasgow and are currently negotiating on various sites in London, Birmingham and Edinburgh.

“In addition, we are currently looking at various opportunities in Manchester which might be suitable for us. Within CitizenM's UK rollout, Manchester figures prominently. Manchester is really improving and we are eager to be in the city.”

Although there are no details on a possible opening date or the number of rooms, the chain usually looks to open hotels offering between 150 and 250 rooms, said Brugman.

Peel Holdings is also looking to open a hotel near to its Trafford Centre shopping centre. Peel Investments has submitted a planning application to Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council for a 16-storey, 210-bed hotel which would be located between junction nine of the M60 and the southern boundary of the Trafford Centre.

A public consultation on the scheme will conclude at the end of this month with a view to a full decision in September.
